Meet GPYO's New Artist in Residence!
The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (GPYO) is pleased to announce the appointment of internationally acclaimed conductor and former GPYO Artistic Director Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos as the organization’s first Artist-in-Residence.
About Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos
Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos is an internationally recognized conductor whose career spans symphonic repertoire, opera, musical theater, and film-with-orchestra performances. He has conducted leading orchestras and productions throughout the United States and abroad, and is widely respected for his versatility, musical depth, and commitment to education. Maestro Kitsopoulos previously served as Artistic Director of the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra from 1989 to 1992. |
The appointment formalizes a growing artistic partnership between Maestro Kitsopoulos and GPYO, following his recent work with GPYO’s Symphonic Orchestra through a series of masterclasses and coaching sessions. In this new role, Maestro Kitsopoulos will work with GPYO conductors and student musicians during both the organization’s summer programs and regular season, serve as an adjudicator for the annual Matteo Giammario Concerto Competition, and help guide and expand GPYO’s artistic endeavors.
Maestro Kitsopoulos served as GPYO’s Artistic Director from 1989 to 1992 and has since built an extraordinary career on concert stages, in opera houses, and on Broadway. His return to GPYO brings the organization’s history and future into direct conversation, offering today’s students the opportunity to learn from an artist whose own musical path is deeply connected to GPYO’s legacy. “We are so thrilled that this partnership has developed over the past year, and we know that Maestro Kitsopoulos’s impact will resonate for years to come,” said Lorraine Goodman, Executive Director of GPYO. “His generosity, artistic insight, and deep connection to this organization have already made a meaningful difference for our students. As our first Artist-in-Residence, he will help strengthen GPYO’s artistic foundation while opening new possibilities for our young musicians.” As Artist-in-Residence, Maestro Kitsopoulos will support GPYO’s commitment to high-level orchestral training, mentorship, and performance opportunities for young musicians. His work will include coaching conductors, leading or supporting student workshops and rehearsals, advising on artistic initiatives, and helping GPYO continue to build meaningful pathways for advanced student musicians. The appointment also strengthens GPYO’s annual Matteo Giammario Concerto Competition, named in honor of the organization’s founder. The competition gives advanced GPYO musicians the opportunity to perform as soloists with the Symphonic Orchestra and remains one of the organization’s most important student achievement programs. “Maestro Kitsopoulos brings not only world-class artistry, but also a rare understanding of GPYO’s history, purpose, and potential,” said Joseph Pucciatti, Artistic Director of GPYO. “His presence will be invaluable to our students, our conductors, and the continued artistic growth of the organization.” GPYO’s Artist-in-Residence initiative comes at a time of renewed growth for the organization, which has expanded programming, increased tuition assistance, introduced new ensemble opportunities, and deepened its commitment to providing excellent training and performance experiences for young musicians across central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. |
