Symphonic Orchestra Audition Requirements

SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 
​All new students should attend a regular audition session. Those considered for the Symphonic Orchestra will be asked to return for a second hearing or submit a video. 

Please prepare a single video with all of the components (scales and solo pieces).

• Scales – please see below for details. 
• Please play the required excerpt from the files in the links below.
• Also choose a 2 minute excerpt of a piece that you are working on.

​Strings 

• Eb & A scales - 2 octaves, 8 slurred to a bow as eighth notes, with the quarter note = 120
• C melodic minor
• F# melodic minor - two octaves separate bows as quarter notes =120​

Woodwinds and Brass

• Eb & A scales - 2 octaves, slurred  with the quarter note = 120
• F# melodic minor - two octaves play as quarter notes =120
• C melodic minor
• Chromatic scale (starting note, your choice) – 2 octaves

Percussion 

• Snare Drum – Etude from Goldberg: Modern School for Snare Drum, or comparable etude.
• Timpani – Two Drum Etude, from Goodman: Modern Methods for Timpani, or comparable etude.
• Mallet Demonstration – on xylophone, marimba, etc.

Harp

• Arpeggios-A7, G7, C7; 2 octaves up and down, root position.
• Glissando-starting on C with B# and Fb pedals.
• Solo/etude of choice that best demonstrates your musicianship.
